The aviation industry is also evolving into an aircraft maintenance and technical services hub, which not to mention is the known fact that Indian Aviation industry is not only expanding in terms of quantity of flights and passengers but also in terms of market value.  The Adani group, a prominent Indian based conglomerate has recently shown a considerable increase in its presence in the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) sector which is a historic step towards the aviation infrastructure and the aviation career in India.

As a key breakthrough, Adani Defence and Aerospace, along with Prime Aero Services has entered into an agreement that is conclusive to acquire a hundred percent stake in Indamer Technics Private Limited (ITPL), an MRO provider that belongs to the private sector. This is a part of the larger plan of establishing an integrated aviation services platform which serves both the civil and defence aviation requirements.

The MRO Expansion of Adani: What and why it is big

The acquisition of Indamer Technics in the MIHAN (Multi Model International Hub And Airport At Nagpur) Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Nagpur provides Adani with an ultra-modern, which can host upto 15 aircrafts bays in 10 hangars. India has issued certifications to these facilities by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) as well as international maintenance regulations agencies like the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), allowing both Indian and international aircraft clients to get maintenance services.

This action is an extension of previous growth in the MRO segment, which saw Adani acquire Air Works India, one of the largest MRO firms of the country with a national presence. Air Works and Indamer are both known to provide a joint platform which Adani hopes to expand into a global-level maintenance hub in the field of aviation.

Why That is Good News to Students

As a larger integrated MRO platform, India will need additional trained maintenance engineers and skilled technicians not only to do the routine checks but also to support other higher-level services like component overhauls, as well as to support civil and defence aviation operations. It also happens that students undertaking specialized training in aeronautical engineering will be in a good position to utilize these growing opportunities, be it in the form of an airline, MRO providers or aviation services companies.

The move by Adani to venture into the MRO sector is a good indication to career prospects in the aviation industry for Aircraft Maintenance Engineers:

  1. Expanding infrastructure for aviation implies the creation of job opportunities that are related to technical and maintenance fields.
  2. Strategic investments provide career diversity outside the flight operation
  3. India identifying itself as an MRO hub in the world will indicate both domestic and international opportunities

Students aspiring to work in aviation technology and maintenance would be able to enjoy a vibrant and rapidly changing labour market that promotes specialization skills as well as providing access to civil and defense services, empowering them with diverse experiences in the field.
